San Diego Gold RefineryJewelry designer Geralyn Sheridan, of AicoraGems “Jewelry Box” Gallery in Philadelphia, PA is known for her eco-friendly jewelry featuring recycled gold and silver. According to a report by, Sheridan’s “Two Joined as One” wedding ring, which she created for a customer from all recycled materials—gold and an heirloom diamond—was chosen to be among five finalists in the wedding-ring category at the 2011 NICHE Awards, held at the Buyer’s Market of American Craft (BMAC) show in Philadelphia.

Trade publication NICHE magazine started the prestigious competition in 1989 “to celebrate excellence and innovation in American and Canadian fine craft,” as it says on its website, “This ring was made with 100 percent gold from the family [I was designing the ring for], as well as the diamond being a family heirloom,” Sheridan told reporter Christine G.K. LaPado before she left for Philly. “I like to say it is recycling at its finest.”

In San Diego, it has been San Diego Jewelry Buyers and its owner Carl Blackburn (an internationally-recognized jewelry designer) who has been leading the push for jewelry, gold, and silver recycling. Blackburn’s company operates its own San Diego gold refinery through which it melts down all of the scrap gold and silver that it buys. They then resell that recycled gold for use by local jewelry artisans to create more eco-friendly jewelry. A recognized advocate of sustainable luxury, Blackburn also promotes the recycling and resale of pre-owned luxury handbags, shoes, and accessories.
